Back to Life, Back to Reality

Ah, the beach.  It was lovely.  The Boy and The Girl got to run around with their cousins and splash in the waves.  No one slept much, but I don't think I've ever seen grins quite so wide.

Now it's time to do everything on the "worry about after vacation" list: sell the apartment*, find a mover, find a pre-school, move.  The lease on our rental starts Friday, believe it or not, so we could be out soon.  Really soon.

I was hyperventilating over the to do list with a friend whose only advice was, to paraphrase Nike, "Just do it."   No hours spent on the Internet researching realtors and movers and strategies for extricating your almost three year old son from the only home he has ever known with a minimum of trauma.

Gah.

And how are you?

*At one point we talked about subleting the apartment and perhaps we still will, but holding on to a too small apartment merely for the sake  of maintaining the illusion that we could easily return to the city seems a little disingenuous.

Hmm. Just want to say that I will be watching this blog since we plan to move from the only apt my 2yo has ever known into a house before the end of the year as well.

She's right. Whatever you do, it's going to be tough, so you just power through.

I was wondering today when our new place will feel like home. Maybe after we spend a holiday here? I don't know.

I have to think a PS apartment will sell in a flash. In fact, I'd buy it myself except if it's too small for you it's probably too small for us, too.

Wishing you much happiness in your move to the 'burbs. It will be an adjustment, but hopefully you have found a spot that is not too much of a culture shock from life in Park Slope.
Best wishes from a former Brooklyn Heights, now NJ, by way of CT, resident.

too bad you didn't get much rest during your vaca, sounds like you have a lot on your plate! phew... good luck with it all.

hey! What news! I just want to tell you that I've been amazed at how well my little ones have done with all the moving and changes we've dealt with in the last few months. We're settling in to our new (rental) house and my girls are doing great. And honestly? My only thought right now is how great it is to be here and out of the city. It's been a lot easier than I thought. Then again, check in with me this winter!
Hope it all goes well - I'll be reading to get updates.

We moved when my son was a little younger and it was a snap. Home is where Mommy and Daddy are...it will be fine. Good luck with the move. I know how extremely exhausting it can be.

Is an apartment in NY what we would call a condo in Chicago? In Chicago, you rent an apartment, but you buy a condo. So, since you're selling, it sounds like you own. Does this question even make sense?

Congrats on finding a good place to rent! The choices can be truly overwhelming. I think avoiding the research phase and "just doing it" is brilliant advice - easier said than done, of course. I'm so grateful that we'll be able to experience your move vicariously, as we explore very similar options... best of luck with the sell, the move, and the transition!

COngrats on finding a new home. I am a suburbanite through and through -- so I can't commiserate with the whole leaving the city thing. But I have to tell you we have moved a LOT. Once when my son was 2, then 2 1/2, then 4 and then 5. The only time I think he showed any issues was when he was 5. Every other time it was an adventure and I was shocked at how quickly he forgot the other houses. My daughter was 11 months and almost 2 when we moved and same thing -- we didn't even have a night's upset with sleep. So I hope that you experience the same.

Why is it that we seem to get less sleep on vacations than normal?

Good luck with the selling and moving.

Good luck with the move. We are moving to the "burbs" this Sunday, so I know the feeling. Call Flatrate movers in NYC, we got a really good quote and they have a great rep.

Am I the only one who's had that song stuck in my head for 2 days now???

Good luck on the move!

We also used Flatrate (although we moved only 3 blocks--don't know how far out of NYC they will go) and were very happy.

Surely the community to which you're moving has Yahoo parenting groups or some such? To find a preschool? People log on to our neighborhood one all the time in advance of moving here.

Good luck!
