Wednesday Wrap Up
I have been remiss in thanking you all for your advice. I've read everything you had to say and more, and I've done...nothing.
Well, almost nothing. I've adopted this basic plan: I've stuck to whole milk, but reduced the amount she drinks (from roughly 24 to 18 ounces per day). I've been choosing snacks and foods that are lower in sugar (for example, oat bran pretzels instead of animal crackers). I've been serving her vegetables as the first part of her meal and experimenting with different preparations (right now we're big into roasted carrots and zucchini).
We'll see what happens. If you have further thoughts on the subject (beyond, "My God, you've been giving her animal crackers?"*), I'm all ears.

Otherwise, I spend most of my time wringing my hands over the state of the economy and the election and the same things everyone else is worried about. Our apartment in Brooklyn is on the market, which is such spectacularly awful timing that it makes me laugh when it doesn't make me weep.
As my husband observed, no one's going to buy an apartment (even one as lovely and well priced as ours) without the Bailout. Is anyone even lending money anymore? Yet I'm still not sure I can really get behind it. I mean, I never even took Econ 101, but aren't free markets supposed to be free? Aren't complete financial meltdowns the (incredibly high) price we have to pay for that freedom?
*Only rarely! As a treat! And they were organic! Sheesh.
Actually, I was wishing you would feed me some animal crackers. They don't even have to be organic.

Oh!!! milk!!!!
I had totally forgotten about milk (though that was a big part of your question...)
When I finally (don't even ask me when, it is too embarassingly late) started to cut down my daughter's fluid milk intake and replaced it with other sources of dairy (cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese ...) a remarkable thing happened: she started making better food choices and slimmed down a bit. Now granted, she was much older than your daughter, but I still think all those fluid calories (nutritious though they were) interfered with her body's signals re: food after a certain age. Worth a thought, anyway.

I've also reluctantly switched to skim yogurt after a glorious year or so of using my toddlers as an excuse for full-fat goodness. It sounds like you're feeding her amazing stuff - do you feel like you have more time for cooking, etc in the burbs? Just wondering - not sure why you would! Good luck with the apt - hopefully Park Slope will remain as pricey and desirable as ever...

We just bought a house (escrow closed on Friday) and feel incredibly lucky that we squeaked in just in time. There are still buyers out there, it just requires a bit more patience at this point. Good luck!
I love animal crackers. Too bad they are full of wheaty goodness AKA gluten. The next time someone scorns your crackers, remind them that they are chock full o wheat. Isn't wheat good for you? Of course it is!

Good luck selling your apartment; I hope that it moves soon.

Any chance of renting it out? Even six months would make a difference.
Good luck!
